Pitcher Plants capture more insects each summer than any other type of Carnivorous Plant. By Fall, each leaf fills an inch deep with insect carcasses. Leaves form hollow tubes that allow insects in but not out! Colorful markings, delicious odors, and sticky nectar attract insects. Once in the traps, insects lose their footing on wax covered walls and slip to their death. Spines propel bugs deeper inside. Pools of enzyme water digest the proteins from the insects in a few days. | The California Pitcher Plant, commonly called the ‘Cobra Lily’, is related to Sarracenia. Twisting nectar oozing leaves, long fangs, clear leaf windows, are all part of the trapping system. We offer one year old plants, grown in our greenhouses. Fangs are already visible! In the wild, leaves will grow 4 feet tall, with heads larger than a man’s fist. These are small plants now, but are great to grow on to large plants for next year. |
